Ice Cream Alchemy

For those who don't already follow my ice cream blog, Ice Cream Alchemy, I wanted to point you in that direction. I just posted for the first time iiiiin...well...as we know I take a lot of time in between posts and this happens to be one of those instances. However, there is a new one surrounding a new original recipe! Feel free to check it out, try it out, leave some feedback...you know the drill. If you would like, you can also follow my future posts by subscribing to my RSS Feed or by following it at the very bottom like so many of you have done here. Thanks so much for your support, folks, you. Are. Fabulous.

In addition, I have been entered into a contest to have one of my ice cream flavors published! Like in a BOOK. Please click on the button below and rate my recipe...I would be eternally grateful! PLUS, if my recipe is published, I plan on giving away the book on this very blog! So! Voting for me could very well benefit you as well. Thanks everyone!

Lego-Mania

At long last, my giveaway winner's cupcakes have been made. She knew exactly what she wanted which was great; however, her theme was quite a challenge for me! Kate chose Lego as the theme, which sounds easy in theory...but when you have 2 dozen cupcakes to work with it's hard to make them not look boring. Luckily, she provided me with a few additional guidelines...I was to incorporate these two images in my work:

I won't lie, this entire project took me two tries. My first batch of cupcakes turned out sponge-y and tasting like eggs. I tried using some leftover gumpaste which became crusty and unusable, so I gave up. I took a week off from the project, stocked up on ingredients, and gave it another go yesterday. I had my mojo back or something, because not only did the cupcake batter turn out infinitely better, but my fondant turned out better than it ever has before! Unfortunately, it started to crack a little later, but the process was much easier this time. I used a great recipe from allrecipes.com that I plan on using again next time I do a baking project.

Kate's requested flavors were chocolate chip cupcakes with chocolate buttercream for the frosting. I took a little artistic liberty and put the layer of buttercream between the cupcake and the fondant. I knew it would be impossible to get the cupcakes to turn out how I wanted without a circle topping of fondant, but didn't want the enjoyment of the cupcakes to suffer on account of the fondant (which actually tasted MUCH better than I expected). I feel like there are still a lot of things I would do differently with this project, but I gave it my best and hopefully Kate and her husband will enjoy their cupcakes! Thanks again to everyone who participated, and don't forget to become a fan of Byte Size Creations on Facebook!

My biggest gripe about these is that I wasn't able to use any red. My red fondant always turns pink so I didn't want to risk it. I feel like these would have looked a lot better if I had been able to use a bright red in addition to all of these...the blue is also a lot lighter than it could have been.
